About our cause
Parkside (Aldershot & District Learning Disability) is a registered charity based in Aldershot and Farnborough that provides support services for children and adults with learning disabilities living in the local area, covering both Hampshire and Surrey. It was founded in 1963 by a group of parents who realised that the support for families who had children with special needs was limited. The premises next to the park on Guildford Road were built and the first playgroup was started (affectionately known as the Peter Pan Club).
Parkside’s aim as a charity is to give both children and adults the opportunity to develop their individual skills and take part in activities within the local community. Needs can vary from requiring support to socialise with friends, to participating in leisure activities, meeting new people, developing life skills, and providing respite for other family members.
We have a gardening in the community work experience programme which for a small fee can help the elderly and those that need support in maintaining their gardens. We also have a garden in Aldershot where we grow fruit and veg, and a group meet weekly to manage this land. We often need money for seeds, compost and garden equipment.
We have a sensory suite that enables both clients here at Parkside and other local organisations supporting those with a learning disability the opportunity to use equipment that provides real benefits.
We need your help so we can continue to offer the variety of support for all the children and adults, with a variety of services, which meet their needs! We support over 150 children and adults and the money we raise will pay for a variety of activities and equipment that support the running of the charity.
Below is just an example of how donations are spent.
• Sensory Suite equipment and maintenance
• Arts and crafts
• Music and drama Therapy
• Minibus and vehicle maintenance
